Course Objectives

This course will help you perform more confidently when interacting in English. We will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and improve the skills necessary for successful English language proficiency.

Using authentic English materials such as magazines, newspapers, radio, TV, websites, this course will help you to develop your English language and communication skills while working on your pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary.

Speaking

Making yourself understood. Fluency building; rhythm and pace. Conversation skills, telephoning, enquiring and explaining.

Reading

Reading for gist and purpose: understanding the main points. Scanning: finding specific information. Skimming: judging the usefulness of a text.

Writing

Organising a paragraph, structuring a text; signposting. Informal text types: notes, emails, stories, journals, reviews. Formal text types: letters, essays, reports, articles, forms.

Listening

Active listening strategies in conversation. Listening for detail: gathering specific information. Listening for themes: understanding the main ideas.

Grammar

Tense and aspect: past, present, future; perfect; passive vs active. Grammar words: articles, prepositions, adverbs, pronouns, auxiliary verbs. Relative clauses, modals and conditionals to express more sophisticated concepts.

Vocabulary

Strategies for building vocabulary: suffixes, prefixes. Word families, synonyms and antonyms. Phrasal verbs, colloquialisms and collocation.

Pronunciation

The 46 sounds of English – the phonemic chart. Syllables and words – putting the sounds together. Word and sentence stress; intonation.

Business English

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to raise and consolidate your knowledge of business English to help you perform better in the workplace. The course focusses on practical business communication skills such as telephoning, emailing, taking part in meetings, presenting, negotiating and socialising.

We use a range of authentic materials, including presentations, graphs, news articles and other realia to help you operate in the real world. Lessons are designed so that you can put newly acquired skills into practice instantly.

What do you do?

Talking about jobs and responsibilities. Your work and life situation – grammar review.

Trends

Describing changes and trends. Describing diagrams and charts. Adverbs and adjectives.

Telephoning

Exchanging information. Real telephone English and standard phrases. Checking understanding – repetition and clarification. Active listening – showing interest and understanding.

Emails

Openings and closings. Register – formal vs. informal. Email simulations – typical situations.

Meetings and Negotiations

Brainstorming and troubleshooting. The grammar of diplomacy and persuasion. Agreeing and disagreeing. Language patterns in meetings and negotiations. Steering the negotiation or meeting. Interrupting and preventing interruptions. Linking ideas and developing arguments (conjunctions). Generalising and indicating relevance.

Socialising and Networking Skills

The little words – discourse markers narration. Conversation features and skills. Small talk.

Presentations

Rhetoric – making an impact. Fixed expressions. Mapping the presentation. A 10 point presentation plan – preparing your presentation. Live presentation and feedback.

IELTS Preparation

Course Objectives

This course will raise and consolidate your knowledge of the General or Academic IELTS exam and will improve your language awareness and skills to help maximise your potential. Writing

Summarising and explaining the information on a graph, table, chart or diagram. Describing and explaining data, the stages of a process, how something works, an object or event. Writing an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

Reading

Learning to deal with a variety of question types. Reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail. Skimming, understanding logical argument, recognising writers' opinions, attitudes and purpose.

OET Preparation

The Occupational English Test (OET) is an English language test for healthcare professionals.

Partnered with our authorised preparation and test centre, BSC Manchester, this online course shares their teaching excellence and will comprehensively prepare you for the OET which focuses on industry and workplace specific language. Tailored to your specific needs, the course is designed to build on skills and target language which healthcare professionals will encounter within the test and also in their everyday working life.

Writing

Reading

Developing reading skills on the types of texts you will find when working in healthcare, such as procedures, internal announcements and healthcare journals.
